Are you thinking about hosting a block party? Block parties are a great way to get to know your neighbors while enjoying some delicious food. Most block parties are held in the summertime, but as long as the weather is nice, they’re popular almost any time of the year. Consider a few tips on how to host a successful block party.
Permit or No Permit
One thing to consider is whether you need to get a permit to have your block party. Sometimes the officials in your city or town need to approve of your idea, the date, and the location. Alternatively, if you live in a townhome, you likely need the permission of the homeowner’s association (HOA) before planning your block party.
Spread the Word
In order to have a successful block party you have to let people know when and where. Today, many neighborhoods have a social media page visited by people living in the area. In addition, there are apps designed to connect the people living in a particular neighborhood. These are both high tech ways of letting your neighbors know about your party.
Of course, you can go old school and create handwritten invitations to leave with your neighbors. Be sure to include an RSVP along with your phone number.
Create a Sign-Up List for Food Items
Making a sign-up list for food items is an easy way to make sure you don’t end up with 16 bowls of potato salad and no baked beans! Once again, a neighborhood’s social media page is a useful tool for spreading the word you need folks to bring appetizers, desserts, salads, sides, and more. As the list gets filled up, you have a better idea of how much food will be available.
Borrow or Rent a Couple Long Tables
Two or three long rectangular tables are excellent for setting up a buffet. You may be able to borrow tables from a local community center or rent them for a small fee from a business. Throw some white and red checked tablecloths on them to add to the fun tone of your block party.
Get a Grill
Let’s face it. It’s not a true block party without at least one grill full of sizzling hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken and even corn on the cob! Maybe you have a favorite charcoal grill that gives your burgers and hotdogs just the right flavor. Perhaps you have a gas grill that you love to use for any outdoor gathering. Or maybe you’re looking to upgrade your grill. A block party is a great reason to spend time redecorating your patio space and looking for a new grill. You’re likely to find your new favorite grill there!
Supply the Music
A block party is not as fun without some music playing in the background. A simple CD player with a couple speakers attached is perfect for playing the classics, modern rock, and anything in-between! Hiring a local band is another option if you want something extra special for your outdoor celebration.
Finally, it’s a good idea to stock up on the essentials like napkins, cups, paper plates and eating utensils so you have plenty available for guests.
