How to care for tires while they are in storage
  1. You may have purchased a set of tires that you are not currently using. This does not necessarily mean that you need to get rid of them. If you have the space available, you can store tires for a considerable length of time, and still be able to use them safely in the future. However, you need to be careful about the way that you store tires; do something wrong and the tires could end up being completely useless and/or dangerous.

One thing that is never a good idea is to simply leave tires on a vehicle that you know is not going to be used for a significant period of time. In order to protect that set of Goodyear tires, they should be removed and stored away, in a safe and effective manner. If you do not do this, the tires could become useless in less than one month.

Making sure that tires are in the right condition to be stored away

Tires should never be put into storage while they are dirty. If you have just removed the tires from your car, it’s likely that they will have some debris on them. Use a tire brush and some soapy water to clean the tires, then make sure that they are left to dry completely. Once this has happened, you need place the tires in individual plastic bags. All of the air should be removed from these bags before they are fastened around the tires.

Never store tires outdoors

Once the tires have been prepared, you need to make sure that they are stored in an appropriate place; this should never be outdoors. This is due to the temperatures and conditions that the tires could be exposed to. This type of exposure can cause tires to crack which means they are of no further use. If you are going to store tires for any significant period of time, you need to make sure that you have space put aside indoors where there is no direct sunlight and the atmosphere is cool.

Avoid any form of heat when you are storing tires

Exposure to heat can cause serious damage to tires. This can mean that you end up getting rid of tires that could have been perfectly serviceable if they had been kept away from the heat source. In some properties, problems can of the arise from tires being placed in close proximity to heating pipes. You may not immediately think of these pipes as being any danger to the tires you are storing, but they are. You should also avoid placing tires anywhere where they are likely to be exposed to potentially damaging substances, such as petrol and grease.

How should tires be positioned in storage?

Once you have found the best place to store your tires, you need to determine how they should be placed while they are in storage. If you are only likely to be storing the tires for a short period of time, it’s fine to keep them in stacks, as long as the stacks are no more than four feet tall. It’s worth noting that, even for a short period, tires should ideally be stored on pallets, so that they are not in direct contact with the floor.

If you want to store tires for a longer period of time, you should never keep them in stacks. The only way to ensure that the tires remain in the correct shape to be used is to invest in a tire rack. Doing so means that all tires can be kept off the ground and stored vertically. While the tires are in storage, it’s important that you make sure the correct pressure is maintained inside them. You do this in the same way that you would if the tire was on a vehicle. You simply need to check it with a tire pressure gauge and pump more air into the tire if necessary. If you simply leave the tire in storage and forget about it, it’s likely that it will be of no use should you want to use it in the future.

Tires can be an expensive purchase, so it makes sense to use ones that you already have, if possible. This is why some people keep tires stored away for the future. You may also want to store tires if you are temporarily unable to drive your car due to being away from home or having an injury. In these cases, it’s better if you can get someone else to use the car for you as this helps to keep the car in good working condition. However, if removing the tires and storing them away is the only option, you need to ensure that you do so in the right way.

Failing to store tires correctly could mean that they are not safe to use when you eventually need them. You may not realize this until you have an accident as a result of the poor performance of the tires. At this point, tire failure could result in serious injury. You can see why it’s so important to take time to store tires in the correct way. If you are not willing, or able, to invest this time, then it’s better to get rid of tires which are not going to be of any use and buy new tires if you need them at any point.
